House Cooper - Lateral Support

Client: Private
Engineer: Chris Behrens Consulting Engineers
Geotechnical Design: PERAGAGE Consulting Engineers
Project Period: 6 March – 17 August 2023

Located above the Beacon Isle Hotel and accessed via Beachy Head Drive, this project involved providing critical geotechnical support for the future construction of a private residence.

Fairbrother Geotechnical Engineering was appointed to carry out the lateral support works on this challenging, vegetation-sensitive site.

Scope of Work:

  • Lateral Support: Installation of 32 forum-bored piles (406mm diameter) and 26 ODEX percussion micropiles.

  • Structural Reinforcement: Steel waler beams and 14 steel props, anchored into 13 cast heel blocks, were used to stabilise the system.

  • Infill Support: 188.8m² of mesh-reinforced shotcrete arches formed the infill panels between piles.

Project Precautions:

Special environmental precautions were taken to protect the many indigenous and protected Milkwood trees on the property. These protections required formal environmental approval and resulted in preserving the natural site character.
