Penhoek Pass - Slope Stabilisation

Client: Group Five Civil Engineering
Engineer: Worley Parsons
Location: Eastern Cape, South Africa
Project Period: April – October 2014

As part of the National Route 6 upgrade through the mountainous Penhoek Pass, Fairbrother Geotechnical Engineering was appointed to provide slope stabilisation and rockfall protection for newly widened road cuttings.

Scope of Work:

  • Lateral Support:

    • 4,125 m² of fibre-reinforced shotcrete

    • 446 tensioned rock bolts

    • 346 self-drill anchors

  • Rockfall Protection:

    • 200 m of 500 kJ energy-rated Geobrugg rockfall catch fences installed at the crest of slopes

Project Challenges:

The work was carried out under harsh weather conditions, including sub-zero temperatures and snowfall during the Eastern Cape winter. Despite these challenges, Fairbrother successfully delivered a durable slope stabilisation system ensuring long-term safety for road users.

This project demonstrates Fairbrother’s capacity to execute technically demanding geotechnical works in remote, high-altitude environments.
