Rehabilitation of TR31, Montague Ashton - Lateral Support
Client: Basil Read Civil Contractors
Engineer: AECOM
Location: Ashton/Montagu, Western Cape
As part of the TR31 road rehabilitation between Ashton and Montagu, Fairbrother Geotechnical Engineering was commissioned to provide temporary lateral support solutions for the construction of three new bridge abutments and piers.
Scope of Work:
Lateral Support:
Installation of 240 mm diameter soldier piles at 1 m spacing through cobbles, boulders, and into bedrock
Whaler beams and self-drill anchors used to support the pile walls
1,400 m² of shotcrete infill installed between piles
Dewatering: Assisted with water control at select bridge foundation locations
Project Challenges:
The complex geological conditions—including dense cobbles and boulders—required robust drilling techniques and adaptive engineering. Fairbrother’s design-and-supply approach ensured timely support of the bridge excavations under tight construction deadlines.
This project underscores Fairbrother’s ability to deliver practical and reliable geotechnical systems in high-risk civil infrastructure environments.
